“Let It Go… Let It Go…”

As a first-time mommy, there were many instances where I blamed myself for doing (or not doing) something for my boy. For example, if I had introduced bottle-feeding earlier, he would have been more receptive to it. If I had been more vigilant, he would not have fallen off the bed. If I had cut his nails more regularly, he would not have left a big scratch across his face. If I had not raised my voice at him, he would not have burst into tears. And the list goes on and on…

Each time something happened (which can be quite often), I would lament to my hubby about it. I would tell him how sorry I felt, how the incident could have been prevented, what a lousy mother I am, etc. One day, in the midst of my self-reproach, he just turned to me and started singing “let it go… let it go…” As many of us would have known, this is the famous theme song from the Disney movie “Frozen”. At that moment, I didn’t know whether to laugh or to punch him in the face! Come to think of it, perhaps I really shouldn’t be too hard on myself. After all, these are relatively minor stuffs in the grand scheme of things, although they did seem serious at that point in time.

I once came across this wise advice – “Life should be touched, not strangled. Sometimes you’ve got to relax and let life happen without incessant worry and micromanagement.” I think this should apply to motherhood as well! As mommies, we should learn to let go a little and not squeeze too tight. Easier said than done, I know, but this is something that I am trying to remind myself constantly. So nowadays when I am faced with an unhappy event, I would take a deep breath and start singing “let it go… let it go…” It has been working quite well for me – my baby steps to becoming a more cool and chill mom :)

  1. truly understand how you feel cause i'm having the same feeling too, keep asking myself how if i do this and not that!? If i were be more cautious, maybe he will not jump from the bed and fall on the floor...etc etc. seems like as a mother, we tend to give lot of stress to ourselves. may be i should learn how to sing the song too..."let it go~ let it go~" hah!

    • Hi Jennifer! Yah, I guess we all work very hard to be good mothers, and in the process we become prone to self-blaming. This can be rather unhealthy and prevents us from enjoying the true joys of motherhood. So let's cut ourselves some slack and learn to let it go :)
